An exciting 1st night of hockey playoffs to kick off the 2008 NHL playoffs. There were some upsets on the night that weren’t really expected, but that’s what makes the playoffs great, you never know who will win on a given night. The Penguins who are a favorite over the Senators easily won 4-0 and the rest of the games were upsets, with the Avs beating the Wild in overtime, the Sharks losing to the Flames 3-2 and the Rangers beating up on the Devils 4-1. Here are the game recaps and results from the first night of the NHL 2008 Playoffs:
Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Ottawa Senators – Penguins Lead the Series 1-0
The Penguins took control of this game right from the start. They scored 2 goals in the 1st period, getting goals from Gary Roberts and Peter Sykora. Malkin scored in the 3rd period and Gary Roberts scored again late in the third period to drive the Penguins to a 4-0 win over the Senators. Malkin ended the game with a goal and 2 assists, Sidney Crosby was held scoreless. The next game is Friday in Pittsburgh.
New York Rangers vs. New Jersey Devils– Rangers Lead the Series 1-0
The New York Rangers beat up their cross-river rivals 4-1. Former Devil, Scott Gomez recorded 3 assists on the night and the Rangers got goals from Shanahan, Callahan, Avery and an empty-netter from Nigel Dawes. The lone New Jersey goal came on the power play from Paul Martin. The fatal flaw of the Devils is their lack of scoring, and it proved true last night. The next game is Friday in New Jersey.
San Jose Sharks vs. Calgary Flames– Flames Lead the Series 1-0
The Sharks badly outplayed the Flames, but the Sharks were shutdown by their former goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff who made 37 saves on the night. In the game, the Flames were outshot 39-23, but got Yelle and Phaneuf to stake the Flames to an early 2-0 lead. The Sharks got a goal back quickly from Ryan Clowe, but the Flames made the game to a 2 goal lead from Yelle’s 2nd goal of the game. The Sharks got a late goal from Ryan Clowe but couldn’t the equalizer. The next game is Today in San Jose.
Minnesota Wild vs. Colorado Avalanche – Avalanche Lead the Series 1-0
The Wild controlled the tempo of the game from the beginning, but allowed the 1st 2 goals of the game to Sauer and Ryan Smyth. The Wild tied the game in the 3rd period with goals from Mikko Koivu and Todd Fedoruk sending the game to overtime. Joe Sakic won the game in overtime for the Avalanche on a rebound in front. The next game is Friday in Minnesota.
